The Plone Internet Hosting Service I Trust, Use, and Recommend

Running a Plone website requires a hosting service that supports Python and Zope, the building blocks of Plone. The service I personally use is WebFaction.

I have found WebFaction to be an extremely powerful and easy-to-use service, and this very website is running on a shared package 3. With that particular package you can have up to ten domain names pointing to it, which gives you the versatility of having more than one website.

Here are a few of the reasons that I have used them for years to host all of my commercial web projects:

  • A very powerful and easy to understand control panel - You can install various versions of Plone (almost without effort), check your account billing and make payments, setup email addresses, and much more.
  • They currently offer on the shared 3 plan (the one I use) up to 8GB disk storage, 600 GB / month data transfer, up to 10 large sites (you can point up to 10 domain names to your Plone websites or use unlimited subdomains), unlimited email addresses for your sites, plus lots of other applications you can install.
  • You get full shell account with SSH and sFTP access, which is important when running Plone websites - you can get to the Linux prompt of your account for running pack scripts, etc.
  • A very stable and reliable server system - I honestly have experienced almost no downtime over the years. I use a service called siteprobe.com to monitor my websites, and I almost always see 99% - 100% results! Here is a typical siteprobe report for one day's monitoring:

  • The most important reason I stay with Webfaction is the great customer service they give Plone users. Remi and the other people there know a lot about Plone and Python, and they have always been extremely understanding and helpful. They have a really fantastic help system, and are always very responsive to my questions and needs.

I use the shared package number 3, which I use to operate several Plone commercial style websites. If you click on the banner below you can check out the current prices and features.
